User Rating:When I was a younger lad, I spent many a quarter on The Simpsons arcade game at the shore. The Electronic Arts version for the iPhone and iPod Touch seems more of an homage to that game (which was produced at the time by Konami) than a reproduction of it, but it certainly has the correct feel.
The plot? The evil Mr. Burns has hidden some sort of top secret information for world conquest within a donut. Due to a slight error in transportation, the donut ended up in the hands of Homer and is promptly taken away. Vowing vengeance against those who would take his donut, Homer pursues the pastry, beating up anybody who gets in his way.
It’s a wonderful premise to a fun video game. There are sounds from the show and music to accompany the action. The user can even play his or her audio library rather than the game’s background music (which is becoming more and more of a standard feature of games nowadays).
My only complaint regarding the game is that the user is stuck playing Homer. In the original arcade game as I remember it, you could play any of the characters other than Maggie (whose kidnapping was the basis of the plot.
If you’re a Simpsons fanatic, then this is the game for you. If you’re not a Simpsons fanatic and still have five bucks to spare, then it’s a good game anyway. There are enough laughs throughout playing to make it seem like a lost episode.
Quick Take
Value:Exxxxxcellent.
Would I Buy Again:I regret I can buy it only once.
Learning Curve:Even Homer could understand it.
Who Is It For:Anybody who likes The Simpsons. Or video games. Or both.
What I Like:Good graphics. Sounds from the show.
What I Don't Like:Can't play as anybody but Homer.
Final Statement:This game would make Grandpa Simpson proud. Or at least less ashamed.
