Smartphones and tablets have been at the forefront of making television an increasingly mobile and accessible process. With streaming service like BBC iPlayer and 4oD already gracing smartphones for a while, it was inevitable that the premium British cable service, Sky, would also jump on the bandwagon.

Sky Go is a free TV-streaming app that can be used by anyone with a Sky subscription. You can log in to it from your computer or iPhone, and it’s a welcome replacement for Sky Player, which was a paid service (could it be the Sky have realised that their costs are already extortionate?). Using this app, you can instantly access some of Sky’s most popular channels.

The channels currently available on Sky Go are the 4 Sky Sports channels, Sky Sports News, ESPN (if you’ve subscribed to it), 4 Sky Movies channels and Sky News. Granted, the selection is smaller than what you can access from your computer, but sports and movie fans will be happy that they can access quality coverage from anywhere that has a WiFi or 3G connection.

Using the app in a 10MB WiFi environment, the picture quality was crisp and the stream seamless. As expected, performance dropped considerably over 3G, in which case the news channels were the only ones that were really watchable.

Sky Go has an ergonomic and accessible home screen, from where you can instantly select one of the featured programmes that started recently, or look at a list of everything that’s currently on. It’s a little short on options, such as the possibility of remotely recording programmes on your Sky box, or accessing Sky’s On-Demand library. Hopefully these issues will be addressed soon, but for now you can enjoy some of Sky’s finest channels from the palm of your hand.
