At this stage, if you’re reading this article, you’ve probably heard of Skype. I commented a long time ago that the inclusion of video chatting (as well as the ability to work over 3G) on the iPhone made Skype a major competitor to Facetime, particularly since it works with PC’s as well as Macs. Plus you can chat with Android devices as well.
Skype for iPad is the continuation of that really good idea. Having tested both the WiFi and 3G capabilities of the app, I can honestly say that both work great for video (although be careful of reaching your bandwidth limit if video-chatting over 3G). Granted, I found Facetime to be a slightly smoother experience, but Apple has access to code that Skype likely doesn’t.
The app makes great use of the larger screen. Everything is logically and intuitively spread out. It works in both portrait and landscape and if you subscribe to SkypeOut (like myself), you can call regular telephone numbers. The app is also interactive with your iPad contact list. In effect, your iPad becomes a second iPhone.
I find it cute how when you tape the profile icon in the top left corner the iPhone interface comes up. Consider that an added bonus. As with other versions of Skype, you get access to your dialing history plus check your voicemail (voicemail costs an additional monthly fee) and send text messages (also for an additional fee).
I rarely give a perfect 5 review but I have to say that Skype for iPad is one of those that deserve it. Recommended.
