User Rating:The game Solitaire (the traditional Klondike version) owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Microsoft Windows. Early versions of that operating system had the game built-in and made it tremendously popular to the point where the only versions on iTunes cost at least a dollar. Now, ByteRun is giving a version of the game away for free (as of this writing).
The graphics are good and the game play is pretty smooth. Under the Options menu, you can customize the look of the cards as well as the background. You can also turn on and off auto-complete (to automatically finish a game) or turn the sound on and off. Naturally the app contains ads for other games by the same developers, but that’s to be expected in a free version.
While the game is excellent and addictive as-is, there are some improvements that would make it a better experience. The ability to customize the background to anything in the Photo Library would be nice, or maybe even the back of the cards image to something in the photo library. The game does have the ability to play your audio library in the background and that makes it a little more personal.
I’ve been looking for a decent Solitaire game for the iPhone / iTouch and this version is as good as any I have seen. I have a thing for retro games, and how can anybody have a complete retro game collection without Solitaire? Now we just need Minesweeper for a complete Windows experience on the iPhone (with fewer bugs).
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:At this price? Certainly.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Solitaire enthusiasts. Retro game enthusiasts.
What I Like:Good graphics and game execution.
What I Don't Like:It would be nice to customize the background from the Photo Library.
Final Statement:A nice, simple game for the whole family.
