User Rating:SongDNA is an aggregator—it takes several different sources and displays them in an easy to use format. The advantage to this (as is the case for most aggregators) is that it pulls lots of data and presents it to you in one easy to use interface.
SongDNA provides many great and useful features—it displays top chart position, band information, links to band pages, videos (on youtube), and the lyrics to the song. You can even email that information to yourself (or someone you love).
The weakest link in all this though is the data. Without good data, you don’t have much to aggregate. And that seems to be SongDNA’s issue.
I know my tastes are eclectic (and obscure) at best, so I wasn’t surprised when I entered many of the bands I like, only to find an occasional hit. But when I tried searching for ‘Elanor Riby’ by the Beatles, I expected everything to fill in nicely. Instead, I saw most of the data—generic information about the band, lyrics, and image, but no ‘top chart’ position. And maybe I’m harping on that fact more than I should; but (according to my 2 second search in google) it was a #1 hit for 4 weeks in the UK!
When I searched a bit more obscure band (althought somewhat popular), I found that Burning Down the House (by the Talking Heads) topped out at number 9, but it was missing lyrics.
My suggestion for SongDNA is to find several sites that return the same data (such as the lyrics). This way you have a better chance for getting data for all the fields instead of leaving it blank.
Quick Take
Value: Low
Would I Buy Again: No
Learning Curve: If you can use a search engine, you can use SongDNA
Who Is It For: People looking for information a out an artist and/or a song.
What I Like: Aggregates a lot of information in one app
What I Don’t: Data was often missing.
Final Statement: SongDNA isn’t a BAD app, just not a great one. I (personally) found it easier to just use google or wiki than to use SongDNA. If they had more reliable sources (or more sources) this app would be improved greatly.
