User Rating:Leave it to the folks behind Starz’ new series Spartacus: Blood and Sand to develop a pretty kick-ass gladiatorial combat game and then give it away for free, thus ensuring new interest in the series.
The game itself is pretty simple. You are Spartacus and you have to go through a series of fights against various other nasty-looking characters in the series. There is much splattering of blood, although nobody seems to actually get hurt when it happens. You can play the game in story mode or simply go straight to the combat. There is also a challenge mode which is a cross between the story and a quick fight.
The graphics are terrific and are wonderful recreations of the television characters. The controls are the standard touch simulations of a joystick and buttons. The app is pretty intuitive and easy to learn. Certain combatants unlock after reaching specific levels in the game. You can also have head-to-head multiplayer battles via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth with your friends. Overall this is a very high quality game at a give away price, definitely made to promote the new Starz’ series.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand is certainly worth the free download. If you get Starz, it might even motivate you to watch the show.
Quick Take
Value:As large as the Roman Empire itself.
Would I Buy Again:I would happily defeat an army of Spartans for this game.
Learning Curve:Even the slaves could learn it.
Who Is It For:Lovers of blood and combat. Or maybe Christians.
What I Like:Graphics and animation that would impress the Emperor himself.
What I Don't Like:A lack of multi-player fighting. The Emperor wouldn't like that so much.
Final Statement:I am Spartacus! And you can be too at no cost.
