I recently had the privilege of reviewing a game called WordSearch Puzzle. And it was literally what it said it was. It was a WordSearch game, and it was great. Spellwinder is the same sort of idea, but adds an additional twist to the old-fashioned word search game. Once a game is open it looks just like you would expect, it has a word bank at the top of the screen, and a board full of random letters at the bottom. The objective? Find all the words as quickly as possible, duh! The twist? Spellwinder isn’t your normal word search. The words don’t go side-to-side or straight up and down, or even diagonal. Well I guess technically they go all of these directions, but each letter can head a different direction, meaning once you have found a word, you have an extremely crooked line. It’s a tad hard to explain, but you select words one letter at a time, and you don’t have to go the same direction for each letter. You can have the first letter, go down to the second letter, diagonally up from that, then diagonally down, then straight up again, and all around and around until you’ve found the entire word. Once you find all the words in that puzzle you continue on to a new word bank and new board and do it all over again. Each level you get more words, and longer/harder words to find.

Usually here is where I pick on the application a bit. I do my best to find any excuse to not like the app, or rant about how this could be better or that could be better. But honestly, Spellwinder is really fun, and takes an old-fashioned game that I like, and adds a fun little twist. If I had to find something however to nitpick, I guess it would be the amount of words and size of the puzzle. I found the game rather easy, there were only about ten or so words to find at most, and the board was rather large which made the game even easier. More words to find and a larger board would make it a tad harder, and each round a lot longer than the 30 second average I had.

QUICK TAKE

Value: Medium-High

Would I Buy Again: Yes

Learning Curve: Very Easy-Easy

Who is it For: Anyone who enjoys puzzle games, or wordsearches

My Likes: Fun twist on an old game

My Dislikes: Could be a bit harder

Final Statement: Spellwinder is extremely fun if you are a fan of wordsearches. Excluding the fact that the game could be a tad harder, it is great. It will easily keep you occupied if you have a few minutes before a Dr. Appt or something, but don’t expect it to save your progress if you are 15 levels in and your name gets called.
