Admittedly, I’m not that impressed with tower defense games. However, being a fan of the franchise, I like to own Star Wars stuff. When THQ ran a special and reduced the price of this app to 99 cents, I felt practically obligated to pick it up.
I’ve played tower defense games before, but I always found it somewhat dull. You set up guns and other defenses and wait for the enemy to invade, hopefully you put the right amount of firepower in the right place. You then watch the show and do it all over again before the next wave of enemies hit. The Battle for Hoth is similar, but it uses familiar Star Wars icons such as AT-AT Walkers and Hoth Stormtroopers. However, the game feels like that the imagery was simply tacked into some other generic tower defense game, rather than giving it a true Star Wars feel.
For a Star Wars game, the graphics are kind of disappointing and practically look like something that could have on an Atari game in the 80’s. Well, maybe not that bad but certainly reminiscent.
The app does use "Empire" clips between the action (as if to explain the "plot") and for that I give it points. However, again, it feels tacked on. Perhaps if they showed more backstory clips from the movie, it would be a better set up.
While not a bad game, it’s not a terrific one either. Overall, if you like Star Wars and tower defense games, then there are worse things to invest a buck in. However, at full price, this game might be worth skipping.
