Sometimes you just feel as if you’re playing the same video game with different window dressing. Remember the video game Asteroids? SteamTank is the 2009 version of the same game. Basically, you’re a flying tank and you have to shoot down various enemies such as Sky Pirates or flying hunks of grass (at least that’s what they look like).
You tilt the iPhone or iPod Touch to navigate the SteamTank around the screen, and have two choices for firing (which can be set in the Options menu). They are Analog and Touch. Analog allows you to hold your touch on an area of the screen and rotate it to fire. Touch simply fires in the direction of your most recent screen tap.
You can also shake the screen to create a shock wave around the SteamTank to blow all your enemies to Kingdom Come. In case you don’t understand these rules, the app comes with a very cute tutorial which has two anime characters in a conversation. I’m sure you’ll pick it up.
I would have to give this app a "thumbs in the middle" review. While the graphics are good and the tutorial is cute, there is nothing about the app that really grabs me or makes it different than any one of a dozen thematic rip-offs of Asteroids.
Still, if you like that style of game and have $.99 cents to spare, then this is the app for you.
Pros: Good graphics. Cute game. Well designed.
Cons: Not very interesting.

SteamTank is an arcade shooter set in a steam punk universe. Pilot a steam propelled flying tank using a combination of touch and accelerometer controls. Shoot, blast and survive your way through waves of ever increasing enemies. Each enemy type behaves in a different manner requiring a combination of strategy and fast reflexes to survive.Join the battle and help Drake and Lind as they take to the skies to fend off hordes of mechanical drones and attempt to free the world from the sky pirates'grasp! You can't shoot the shrapnel from exploded islands but as a last resort you can use your shock wave to destroy them.- Use the island shrapnel to damage enemies for you. You can also start chain reactions with other islands.- You get score multipliers every time you kill an enemy. Your multiplier resets when you die.- In Wave Attack mode you gain a bomb every 10 levels and a life every 20.- In Onslaught mode you gain a bomb every 25,000 points and a life every 50,000.- If you want to listen to your own music just disable the sounds in the options menu and start your music before launching the app.- The game will automatically pause if you get a call.
