User Rating:There are those that can pull off a backside 180 kickflip into a 50-50 grind, and there are those of us who would like to spare ourselves the hospital bill. For those that enjoy keeping their bones entact, there are many video games that capture the fun of extreme skate boarding. Many of these games require you to learn a long list of special control movements in order to pull off the tricks, and require hours of practice to get the timing right. Stick Skater aims to give you a fun skateboarding game without so much fuss. You may not have time on your commute to send Tony Hawk’s face flying into a lunch table, but with Stick Skater, you can run through several levels and enjoy a simple yet addicting skate board game for the iPhone.
Stick Skater does away with all the brand naming, so don’t go looking for any Element or Girl boards. Don’t exspect to see any 3D Chris Coles or Rodney Mullens, because your skater is the ever famous stick figure. Your character dons his backwards hat and takes to the street in several different environments with many different obstacles you will have to face. The game offers two kinds of controls. A basic control where you have two buttons, one to speed up on the flat parts, and the second performs a random trick. If you are a control freak, or want to have a bit more of a challenge, you can opt for the advanced controls that let you choose the trick with a swipe of the right button. For a casual game I prefer the simplicity of the basic controls, but I appreciate the added features and those that do choose advanced controls will be rewarded with higher scores.
The game itself is side scrolling, and consists mainly of jumping gaps and grinding bars and tables. The graphics are basic flash game style and the difference between locations isn’t much apart from the difficulty and types of obstacles. The game requires you to get through each level without running out of lives, but don’t worry too much if you can’t, it will just bring you back to the beginning of the level. There are tokens to collect that can add to the challenge. The game ramps up its difficulty slowly so you will have plenty of fun all the way through. The buttons are not the most responsive, but they are not too bad once you get the timing down.
Stick Skater is currently $.99 and there is a lite version that gives you two levels to try so there isn’t much excuse not to give this fun casual game a shot.
