Strummer is a better way to learn guitar than Guitar Hero.  At least in this app you’re being taught things like chords.  However, there are a couple of problems with it.

Problem #1:  without anybody to teach you the context of the chords, it’s tough to figure out what to do.

Problem #2:  there is no way out of the help menu short of stopping the app (hopefully this can be fixed in a future release).

Still, the app is a good idea and certainly a good way to learn basic guitar.  Granted, the neck of the guitar where you have to hold down the strings to determine chords is missing, but it’s more the limitations of the iPhone or iPod Touch than anything else.  If you really want to learn guitar, then the first thing you should do is get yourself a real guitar.  Sadly, there are no guitars out there for $.99.

Strummer is not a real guitar, but it’s a pretty good guitar simulator.  Of course, the app is also good for tuning an actual guitar since the chords heard are theoretically in tune themselves.  In that regards, it can also be seen as a guitar supplement.  But in the end, it is not a guitar substitute.

Strummer is a nice-to-have.  It’s not a need-to-have and might even reach the want-to-have status, If you’ve already shelled out a couple of hundred bucks on a guitar (not to mention the cost of an iPhone or iPod Touch), then spend the $.99 and get yourself Strummer so you can practice on the occasions when the guitar won’t fit in your pocket.

Quick Take

Value:Low to Medium.

Would I Buy Again:Maybe.

Learning Curve:High.

Who Is It For:Guitar enthusiasts.

What I Like:The concept. It simulates a guitar as much as an iPhone can.

What I Don't Like:Tough to learn without better instructions. Can't get out of instructions without stopping the app.

Final Statement:Recommended as a supplement to actual guitar lessons.
