And lo, the wyrm cometh and he shall bringeth upon us a downpour of blood that he may cleanse the earth of the human parasite

-the book of wyrm

This is how Mega Worm, a new game by Deceased Pixel, begins. From there the seriousness ends and you begin an over the top zany adventure of death and destruction as a giant annelid bent on the annihilation of all humans. While more subtle, this game takes a cue from the recent game The Incident with plenty of references to cult classic movies the most obvious being the giant worm camp-fest that is Tremors.

In Mega Worm you control a giant segmented worm that can burrow through the ground at high speeds only to rise from the ground and reek havoc on hapless rednecks, and terrified livestock. The worm is controlled with a slider that changes the direction of travel. There is no stopping your worm once the game begins and as you move the worm consumes health which must be replenished by eating or destroying people and animals.

When you begin the game you have a gas button that speeds you but allowing you to make jumps into the air. As you progress through the game you will evolve to gain the ability to fire spit as well as set off an EMP which knocks near by machines out of commission and slows down gameplay for a moment. Later you will gain a more powerful fire spit and more EMP charges. Used EMPs can be recharged by eating crystals that are in the ground.

The graphics are the now common pixel style, and this works well for the overall feel of this game. The surface dwellers have funny statements that are made as you rise from the ground. My favorite is the cows that "moo!" before running for their lives. Each level gives you a quota of humans that need to be dispatched to progress. As levels advance you are met with more resistance, first from police, and then from the military. I won’t spoil the ending, but needless to say it will give those that get the joke a good chuckle.

Mega Worm recently updated to offer Game Center integration with leader boards and the Developer promises achievements in a future update. The game is currently on sale for $.99 so even though the game is somewhat short on content right now I think it is a great offering that is entertaining and enjoyable. Give it a try and remember, they brought this on themselves.
