There’s no denying that touch-based smartphone keyboards have come a long way in recent years. With screens getting bigger and bigger, and ever more responsive, many of us now feel perfectly comfortable with whatever default UI keyboard our phone provides us with.

Yet it’s safe to say that none of them have achieved close to perfection, with some questionable auto-corrections, nonsense words being saved to your phone dictionary, and random bits of punctuation often creeping into our writing.

SwiftKey 3 Keyboard is without doubt an improvement on any default smartphone keyboard out there. Not only does it seem to have an actual understanding of human vocabulary (rather than just individual words), but it also adapts to your personal writing style like no other keyboard.

SwiftKey not only remembers your writing on your phone, but also can be set to learn from other places you write, such as Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, and personal blogs. This means that it takes into account your writing style across many levels, tailoring itself to your exact way of writing. It’s also very grammar-aware, with its Smart Space feature making it automatically correct dodgy or missing spaces throughout your writing.

This keyboard app rocks some smooth styles as well, with several different colour schemes allowing your UI keyboard just how you want it to look (if you’re one of those rare people who actually cares about such a thing).

Many people – particularly those with larger, more comfortable screens – may be content with their current keyboard setup. I really thought I was content with the one preloaded on my HTC One X, but having now encountered SwiftKey, I don’t think I’ll be going back. The finest and cleverest keyboard app out there.

We rate this app 5 out of 5 stars.
