User Rating:I’m not a Taylor Swift fan, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. I don’t own her albums or listen to her songs on my iPod for hours on end, and I certainly don’t have posters and magazine cut-outs of her images plastered on my bedroom wall, but I do enjoy her music once in a while when I chance upon her songs as I surf frequencies on the radio, channels on television, or sites on the Internet.
Despite all better judgment, I’m going to go out and say that the 20-year-old singer is indeed very talented (surely as a singer but apparently not as an actor; I hear her film debut in Valentine’s Day was terrible) and deserving of the success and accolades she’s been getting. And I’m definitely not alone in saying this. Her millions of fans will no doubt agree–the same fans who will also be delighted to learn that their favorite, Grammy-winning female artist now has her very own official iPhone application.
Like most apps that are dedicated to a popular musical act, the Taylor Swift app is packed with features that highlight the artist’s discography and make it immediately available for purchase. One of the key sections of the app is the Music tab, where a list of full-length tracks and ringtones that are up for sale is shown. A "Buy" link is provided opposite each track or ringtone, taking you to that item’s corresponding iTunes page when clicked. Another potentially profitable ingredient of the app, the Tour tab lets you view Swift’s tour schedule and buy tickets to her upcoming shows. You can also see who among her fans have confirmed their attendance to her future shows as well as view some photos from past shows that fans themselves took and uploaded.
The app is also loaded with news from Swift’s official and fan sites (although, oddly enough, no news has ever shown up in the many times that I tried refreshing the page), music videos, photos, and links to her MySpace, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Well aware of the power of social media in boosting and maintaining the artist’s popularity, the developers of the app also added an option to sign up for a mailing list as well as Facebook and Twitter integration to facilitate commenting and sharing. There’s also a dedicated Fan Wall where you can profess your unwavering love and propose marriage to the singer if you’re so inclined.
Another notable feature of the app is the built-in mini-player, which plays looped half-a-minute clips of Swift’s songs while you go about your business within the app. It’s definitely a great touch to an artist-centric music app that is actually done so well I’m almost expecting Kanye West to show up and interrupt the proceedings and attempt to burst Taylor Swift’s iPhone bubble.
Quick Take
Value:Low.
Would I Buy Again:Its Free.
Learning Curve:Zero.
Who Is It For:True-blue and sort-of fans of Taylor Swift.
What I Like:The Interface and the omni-present mini-player.
What I Don't Like:The News tab doesn't seem to contain any news at all, not even old ones, and the app keeps asking if I would like to use my current location for the location-based services after I initially choose not to.
Final Statement:If there's a Grammy for iPhone app, this might deserve it, assuming another app doesn't show up and claim that it doesn't.
