Platforming games have been a difficult genre to master on the iOS touch screen. They require precise controls and responsive gameplay in order to be fun. There have been several great examples of the genre on the app store, but I am always keen to try a new one and see if they can add something new. The Adventures of Timmy: Run Kitty Run is quite a mouthful, but from the initial artwork I was immediately impressed with the color and thought that went into the design. The questions is does TAoT:RKR (I just had to try the acronym) have what it takes to complete with other platformers on the iPhone?

The story is simple and told in quick cut scenes between chapters. You are a school boy who apparently wears a furry costume and has had your girlfriend stolen by the big mean bully who has hidden her away at the top of his tree house. While you might think this is a light hearted school theme, you would be wrong as the levels take on a dark and murky appearance as do the enemies. One of the first enemies you come across is a cute bunny that, upon coming into proximity, transforms into a hideous rabbit beast and attempts to kill you. Your only weapon against enemies is to jump on their head with is widely known as the only weakness of enemies in platformers.

The environment and characters certainly get two thumbs up, but how does the game control? The controls are laid out as a virtual stick on the left with a jump button on the right. The screen is divided in half and anywhere on either side can be used making it easier not to miss a control. For the most part I found the controls responsive and easy to use, but occasionally I would become frustrated by the game not responding to quick movements such as jumping forward from a standing position. It didn’t happen much and I suspect that it is something the developers could tweak with an update, but in some of the more intense platforming areas it can become quite annoying.

I know that many people have verys strong feeling about platformer games on the iPhone due to the touch screen and while I would say that a platform game will never be as good without real controls, developers have done an amazing job of giving us a usable experience, and the boys at CB labs are no exception. Run Kitty Run is a fun game that is simple and will keep you busy for many hours. It is currently on sale for $.99 so seize the day and download this app.

We give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
