With the release of the new Hobbit movie, it was only expected for a complementing game to follow suit. I have never been a fan ofThe Lord of The Rings series though, and thus this review will be based solely on the game play itself rather than focusing on points like plot holes and the such.

A typical city building simulator, the objective of The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth is really very simple, build up your city while gathering resources and turn it into an invincible fortress.

At the start of the game, players are required to choose between the Dwarf or Elven factions. These do not really have much significant nor specific impact on the actual style of the game though other than some aesthetic and name differences. For every weapon a Dwarf may have, the Elves will have something pretty much similar albeit used in a slightly different manner for the sake of individualism. A few exclusive items here and there, but the objectives are still the same. Hence, there is no ‘better’ faction but rather the choice boils down to individual preference.

Actual game play is very complicated, as per most games of the same genre. There are definitive quests to follow although the game pursues a largely sandbox style of play. Of course, fans familiar with the whole city builder genre will know how frustrating it can get when it comes to gathering resources to fulfill particular goals. This is where in-app purchases come in handy though, as money seems to solve everything especially in games.

The Hobbit: Kingdom of Middle-Earth is accompanied by soothing background music that subtly gets the blood flowing.

A free app, fans of the series will definitely not want to give this a miss.
