I’m a fan of the entire Time Out line of magazines. I even have a subscription to Time Out New York. I work and live in the city (although I sleep in New Jersey) and it’s nice to be able to find out exactly what’s happening around town.
The online version doesn’t offer as much as the magazine (or even as much as the website). There are no interviews or articles or even a sex column. The app is something of a bare-bones version of the website and/or magazine. If the logo wasn’t prominently displayed, I’d question if it was a TONY app at all. In any case, it’s a good guide for travelers on the go. It gets your current location and finds retail businesses, events or restaurants in your vicinity. You can even bookmark your favorite locations.
My big complaint about the application is the need for a WiFi connection if using the iPod touch. In the description, it clearly states that a "connection is not required" to use the app. This wasn’t the case in my experience. It’s a bit like false advertising. But the app is free to download, so it’s not like one can get their money back.
Assuming you have an iPhone or one of those MiFi things, it’s a pretty handy app to have, particularly if you have to meet someone or get to something and have no idea where in NYC you are. While the app is no substitute for the Time Out New York magazine or website, it is a nice supplement.
