User Rating:Flipside 5 has an uncanny ability to take traditional games, add fantastic graphics, make excellent use of the touch screen and accelerometer, and end up with great games that are a whole lot of fun to play.
The developers behind Tic-Tac-Touch and Touch4 have brought their talents to yet another old favorite – Air Hockey.
Touch Hockey is simple to learn and fun to play. The graphics are nicely done and the sound adds to the game without distracting from it. I love the fact that, while playing, your paddle only appears when you touch the screen. Moreover, the physics behind the puck’s movement are nothing short of amazing. If you did not know any better you would think this was a real air hockey board, and an actual puck!
One of the really cool things about "Touch Hockey" is that it has a multi player function when you’re playing with someone else over a local wi-fi network. It also features instant replay, real time 3D rendering, and the ability to trap the puck between your paddle and the courts “wall”.
The graphics engine for the game runs an astonishing sixty frames per second and it shows. It runs smoothly without flicker or any sort of hick ups.
It should be noted that in order to make this application free after five minutes of play there are ads that are displayed. In my opinion it is a small price for an excellent free game.
In all, I found playing it to be a whole lot of fun. The small screen on the iPhone and the iPod touch wasn’t much of a distraction from the actual game play either. I did, however, find the instant replay came up when I didn’t intend it to, and I found it increasingly annoying the more I played.
That noted, however, it’s a great game, it’s free, and it’s definitely worth downloading, playing, and having on your iPhone.
