Virtual pets seems a big craze now in the App Store now. This is the second free virtual pet application I’ve downloaded this month. This particular one is the number one free app in the iTunes store as of this writing.
The app requires an Internet connection and to use it you need to register on their website. As with most free apps, there is also banner ads along the bottom.
The creators of this app sacrificed realism for cuteness and the dogs in the application are somewhat cartoony. It gives the feel of adopting a Hanna-Barbera character. On the other hand, the app allows for the adoption of robot dogs, so it can’t be all bad.
Once you adopt a puppy, the application teaches you how to take care of it via a question mark icon. You can make the puppy come to you by tapping it. You can pet it by rubbing back on forth on its body.
There are other items in the room for you and the dog to play with, such as a ball. You can also pick the dog up and have him or her float in mid-air. I can only hope its possible to feed the dog. The background music is somewhat annoying, but there is a settings option to turn it off.
My only complaint is that if you want to go back to settings while playing (or go to the help menu), you can only do so by stopping the program entirely. Overall, it’s a cute app and if you don’t mind giving yet another Internet organization some minor personal information such as name and e-mail, you could do a lot worse.
