User Rating:The game Tower Madness is running a promotion as I write this for a cash prize. In certain non-U.S. countries, it’s even being given away. It’s a bit like playing the lottery for $.99 and getting a video game as a consolation prize. Since I live in the U.S., I took the free version.
The premise of the game is simple. You’re keeping sheep on a farm and aliens are landing and walking through a field to take the sheep in order to make wool scarves for their emperor (yeah, that makes sense). You, a simple farmer, use advanced technology to build gun towers in that field to either destroy the aliens or the flying saucers that they land in.
First, the good: the 3-D graphics are among the finest I’ve seen on the iPhone OS and the user has the ability to zoom in on any section of the farm and view it from any angle is unmatched. It’s the sort of graphical movement that would make any lesser gaming systems give up entirely before the first alien even landed.
The bad: you don’t do much in the game. After you set up the towers, you just watch to see how good a planner you are as the aliens land and the towers you set up try to shoot them down. If you’re a poor planner, they take all the sheep.
Tower Madness is a good premise that would benefit greatly by letting the user participate more … perhaps by having him or her be able to control the direction and shooting frequency of the towers.
The free version only comes with two maps and allows the user to build three towers. The full version ($.99) allows for more maps and more towers.
Pros: Excellent graphics. Funny premise.
Cons: Not much for the user to do after the towers are built.
