In today’s society, people, and especially women, are living to be older and older. With a life expectancy well into the eighties these days, or even 90s, if you happen to live in Japan, it’s no wonder Modern Grannies don’t want to stay cooped up in their retirement home all day. So what should they do? Take a leaf out of Turbo Granny’s book and break free!

Turbo Granny is breaking out of her retirement home, fleeing from the nursing staff, to take to the open roads. She has a choice between three routes, suburbia, the desert and the mountains, and all of these are wrought with danger for an elderly lady on one of those old-people-sit-down-mopeds. Hers can go pretty fast though and you get a different one for each round! You move Granny forward by leaning to the right and slow her down by leaning to the left. This allows you to leap through the air without Granny landing on her head all the time, if you have the patience. Good thing she’s wearing that big old helmet, wouldn’t want that frail old lady to break every bone in her body!

The graphics look great and much attention has been given to detail. Gameplay is pretty flawless, controls respond well. However: I would have liked a bit more explanation. Once you’ve clicked away how the controls work, it doesn’t come back again. Also I thought the starting level was quite difficult: The game introduces a lot at the same time: riding, accelerating, jumping, and trying to stay on the bike, all at the same time. So often, once you’ve finally gotten Granny across a difficult jump, she’ll fall off after all! Frustration! As someone with a regrettably short attention span, I got pretty fed up with Granny falling of that stinking bike of hers all the time. At one point I wanted to yell: “Just get back on the bike, you old harpy, you didn’t fall that hard!” All in all, it’s a good, attractive game, you just need a bit of patience to get the hang of it….
