Just for giggles, I was looking around iTunes to see if they offered a free version of a virtual Rubik’s Cube, and lo and behold one appeared as if by magic.  I honestly don’t get how any of these games makers stay in business by offering so much free content.

Actually, the company makes money by offering an even more sophisticated game called Twistyhedron for $1.99 which must come with every shape under the sun with which to mess up the color coordination.  However, the lite version of app comes with the traditional 3X3X3 cube as well as a dodechedron and a tetrahedron, so I’m happy with it.

I only played with the cube, but the app is pretty simple and straightforward.  If you scroll your finger across the cube, the individual rows move around.  If you scroll your finger on the area outside the cube, the entire thing rotates.  You even get a view of what the other side of the cube looks like (definitely a form of heightened reality).

Like a Rubik’s Cube, you are supposed to organize the colors so that each side is one color.  To make things more interesting, there is a clock function to time how long you take.  To say the least, I didn’t beat the clock.  I must practice more.

This game is definitely worth the download, particularly given the price.  I’ve always wanted to figure out the algorithms to solve the Rubik’s Cube, and now I can without even owning the physical cube.

Pros: Simple.  Fun.

Cons: None that I can see except that the more sophisticated version costs money.

Read the Developer's Notes:
A lighter version of Twistyhedron - don't be limited to cubes locked into a fixed orientation!Twisty3ron brings a sampling of twisty "magic" puzzles in three popular configuration:- Classic 3x3x3 Cube- Tetrahedron ( "Pyramorphix" )- Dodecagon ( "Ultimate Skewb" )The puzzles are rendered using "tiles" attached to each face for the maximal visual cues and impact (with an option for cheap "stickers" ). The puzzles are freely rotatable, with a special "rear mirror" view so you can see the back of the puzzle.Full undo/redo (even saved when you switch between puzzles), shuffle, stopwatch timer, etc...So if you've mastered the Rubik's Cube, step up to a whole new world of challenges!
