überClock is yet another good idea that doesn’t quite work out in execution.  The idea behind it is that while the iPhone or iPod Touch comes with a built-in clock and alarm system, it doesn’t really emulate a bedside alarm clock.  überClock does, sort of.

The app gives a nice graphic of a neon alarm clock and if the user is a real geek, he or she can switch to either the binary clock or the clock with roman numerals.  For me, switching to either of the latter would involve too much calculation and when I get up in the middle of the night to check the clock, I only want to know the time.

The alarm clock app does come with functions standard on an alarm clock, such as snooze.  Being of the iPod brand, you can naturally pick any song in your audio library to wake up to.  You can also change the color of the LED display in the settings.  The app does give a warning when it starts that, since it doesn’t allow the screen to dim, the device could run out of power unless it’s plugged into something.  This warning can also be disabled in the settings.

Suggested improvements include changing the background to possibly make the application a photo frame and alarm clock.  The creators may also want to allow for a larger choice of clock faces ratherr than just three types.  Also, why can’t the application work in portrait mode?  It seems to be stuck in landscape.

If you’re a frequent traveller, then I can see this app as being useful so you can leave home that travel alarm clock.  Otherwise, you can sleep through it.

Quick Take

Value:Medium.

Would I Buy Again:Possibly. If I needed to travel somewhere.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Frequent travellers who bring their iPhones.

What I Like:Good idea. Nice graphics for each of the clock faces.

What I Don't Like:Not much of a clock face selection. No portrait mode.

Final Statement:This is a nice app for travellers, otherwise I would skip.
