User Rating:UpNext is a good idea. A 3-D model for mapping out a city would be very useful for tourists, particularly combined with the iPhone’s GPS capabilities. Currently, the app only covers New York City and Boston, but if successful I’m sure more cities will be on the way in the future.
Here’s the bad news: you need a WiFi or data connection in order to download the layouts of each cities. The good news is that once each city is downloaded (which doesn’t really take that long), it remains there.
I like the app’s ability to zoom in and out in different sections. Plus, twisting your infex finger and thumb around causes the maps to rotate.
The app also allows you to bookmark certain points on the map for later viewing. If an office building is tapped, then the businesses located there are listed. The map even shows transit routes for subways when a button is tapped. Of course, the app needs to make money so there are a selection of eateries and entertainment near any given area (which are pointed out on the map).
Two shortcomings spring to mind regarding this app. It doesn’t seem possible to change perspective and do the view from the street angle, which would be a very useful feature. Also, there is a limited selection of cities for now, but that’s a minor quibble.
Overall, for the price of free, I would certainly recommend this app to anyone travelling to either New York or Boston. If other cities are added, I might even recommend it for $.99.
