User Rating:There are no doubt plenty of people out there who find the default iPhone Calendar App a bit bland. There are no syncing options, the interface is dull, and its awkward functionality makes it virtually worthless. Harsh, but true.
Well Vertical Calendar is here to save those of us who’ve finally become comfortable with the idea of using digital calendars. This app – the ‘Top Calendar App in the Japanese App Store’ – distinguishes itself from the crowd by organising your life vertically rather than in the traditional ‘wall calendar’ layout.
The great thing about the interface is that you can see everything you’ve got going on in a given month from the main screen, giving you an overview which the traditional format just doesn’t offer. It’s all very intuitive; you pinch or double-tap to zoom in, and swipe left or right to change the month you want to view.
To make your calendar more flashy, you can make important days stick out by giving them a specific colour or a little icon such as a sad face, happy face or slice of birthday cake; presumably this is in case simply reading what you have to do on a given day doesn’t quite do enough to evoke the corresponding emotion.
Creating events for the calendar is extremely easy and can be done by either tapping on your chosen day or by tapping the ‘+’ at the top of the screen. Aside from manually adding events, there is a small list of default events that you can choose from such as Travel, Birthday and Meeting place.
The most useful feature of Vertical Calendar is its ability to sync with some of the most widely-used calendar programs, such as Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook and MobileMe, meaning that you’re not restricted to your iPhone for your organisational needs.
