User Rating:Remember all the nice things I wrote about CineXPlayer? I take them all back. Compared to VLC Media Player, CineXPlayer still has a ways to go. To begin with, VLC Media Player is free. Another major issue is that it plays many, many more video formats than the limited DivX AVI files that CineXPlayer can translate.
I threw three major video formats at the VLC Media Player (WMV, MPEG, and an AVI I had used with CineXPlayer) and they all played with no issues. There have been some other articles on the player mentioning video skipping, but I had no such problems.
Like CineXPlayer, the interface is intuitive and uses the same touch controls as the iPhone/iPod touch video library to play or delete files. Transferring files into the player involves a clumsy process. It’s the same one as using CineXPlayer. You have to go into iTunes with your device attached to the computer, click the "Apps" tab on your device and scroll down and select the VLC Media Player. iTunes then lets you select files on your computer to place into the app itself. It’s either that or give the app access to the iPhone video library and Apple considers that a no-no.
Still, it’s easy to use, does a lot and best of all is free. You’d better grab this one quick. There have been rumors of the app being pulled by the developers due to their belief in open source code and not liking Apple’s strict policies.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:At this price? Absolutely.
Learning Curve:Medium.
Who Is It For:People that watch videos that aren't necessarily in iPod-friendly formats.
What I Like:Easy to use. Translates most major video formats.
What I Don't Like:Would be nice to be able to transfer movies via WiFi.
Final Statement:If you frequently watch videos on your iPhone and can't be bothered with a conversion mechanism, this is a must-have.
