User Rating:With the holidays approaching, it should be no surprise that big box retailers would finally wise up and release an iPhone/iPod Touch app for those shoppers that need to buy stuff. This includes the biggest and boxiest of them all, Walmart.
Their app is free, of course. And their selection is … limited. What struck me first about the Walmart app is that the user can only search the electronics department. Is that department their biggest (and only) holiday seller? For all other departments, the user is directed to the Walmart website. If this isn’t a flaw in the program, nothing is.
The app also has a store finder, a search function to look for particular items and the ability to bookmark desired products for later. I guess Walmart is more concerned with bricks and mortar than online sales. Or they have data that proves that most online purchases are for electronics anyway.
Admittedly, the app does come with a cool feature for those with an iPhone. It allows the user to take a picture of an area then, using already created pictures, determine the ideal television size for the area. As someone who is an avid television shopper, I think this aspect of the application is quite neat.
In short, it was the best of apps and the worst of apps. Actually, it falls somewhere in the middle. Still, it doesn’t take up that much space on the device so for the TV feature alone it’s probably worth the download.
Quick Take
Value:Medium.
Would I Buy Again:Probably.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Shoppers.
What I Like:The part of the app that lets you determine a good TV size.
What I Don't Like:The limited selection outside of going to the website.
Final Statement:For free, it's worth the download.
