Can one be overly simplistic?

I’ve always said that I love apps that present information to me in as simple a manner as possible. But Weathercube seems to have overdid that a little.

Taking a panel and rotating cube design, the app is very pretty indeed. 3 main panels are available for scrolling through with one involving a general weather update going at 3 hour intervals and the other two being details of weather breakdown. There, each panel is subdivided into a multitude of small cubes which rotate and display different information when tapped upon. In some instances, when certain cubes reflect information for a particular time frame, other cubes will also rotate accordingly for accurate information.

So what do I not like about the app? For one, there’s a lack of understanding in regards to what all the icons used by the app mean. While doing away with fanciful and long paragraphs does make the app look much more streamlined, it does not help with functionality at all. I would have preferred it if the developers placed a glossary icon somewhere conspicuously to not interfere with the smooth and seamless design, but at the same time make it possible to users to quickly understand what each cube represents without having to bungle around. I also did not like how the country selected by the app was entirely dependent on the actual location of the device. So for instance if I were in Singapore I would not be able to get weather updates for Los Angeles unless I was physically there. This gives an annoying form of restriction when using the app, especially if one wishes to know about weather conditions in a foreign land for whatever personal reasons.

But props must be given to the developers for the user interface. Every transition flows extremely well.

I believe Weathercube impresses better than the default iOS weather app irregardless and is definitely worth the download.
