User Rating:I found Webcorder when I was looking for an app that would record whatever was happening on the screen of my iPhone. I couldn’t find that type of app, but this one comes close.
Basically, Webcorder is a web browser that will, at the tap of a button, record everything that is happening on a website to a movie file. This would be a handy app to have if you run a website and need to create "how to" videos for the use of it.
The app is very simple to use. You simply type in the URL of the site you want to record. Then you tap the "Rec" button at the bottom to record whatever actions you are taking on the site. Once done, you tap the red flashing button on the screen to stop and save the .MOV file to the library. It’s also possible to take a still picture of the website to save to your Photo Library.
One complaint I have (which is acknowledged by the developers) is that the app doesn’t record full screen for retina display. This is likely in order to keep the program universal for all iOS devices. It’s still an issue that should be addressed in future releases.
The movie files can be transferred off the app by e-mail or via iTunes (using the App tab when your device is connected). Being that .MOV files can get pretty big, the latter option is the more likely one to be taken.
Overall, the app is okay for those with particular needs. In that case, it would certainly be worth the 99 cent investment.
Quick Take
Value:Medium.
Would I Buy Again:Possibly, but not likely.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Those who have a website and wish to record the use of it.
What I Like:Simple app. Good functionality.
What I Don't Like:Doesn't show full screen for retina display.
Final Statement:Webcorder is a cheap, decent tool if you're trying to promote a revolutionary new website.
This is a simple web browser whose main function is to allow you to create quicktime movies or screen snapshots of your web browsing session.
It will not capture audio or streaming video, but will capture your web navigation, scrolling, and so on, to a quicktime movie, in either portrait or landscape format. You can then mail this movie off, or copy it into your PC iTunes.
Common discovered uses so far:
- Send a friend a movie of how you found something on the internet, rather than just sending a link.
- Create demos of your internet web site for marketing uses.
- Help a user who is experiencing some kind of web issue, by allowing them to create a movie of their problem.
- Create a movie to help you remember how to get someplace that is more complicated than a link.
- Create movies to have a copy of web session where you registered for something, created a login, choose a password, and so on.
Example movies can be found at the Support URL.
Known Issues: Does not record a full screen on devices with the high resolution Retina display.
