What The Voice?! is currently available for free in the App Store as of this writing. This choice of pricing does not surprise me since all generations of the iPod Touch after the first have microphone capabilities via an outside mic so naturally the quantity of voice-related iPhone and iPod Touch applications would skyrocket.
The app is simple to use. You record a phrase via the Record button in the bottom left corner of the application then play it back in one of the sixteen available formats. My favorite is "robotic". You can also save the audio to a library that is internal to the application when it is done for replay in the future. Saved recordings can also be e-mailed to friends in order for hilarity to ensue.
All this said, I have a few problems with the app. The first is with the limited selection of audio sound effects. Where is the one to make you sound like one of the Chipmunks? Is there some sort of legal reason that the choice isn’t included? I suspect in order to make some money the creators will offer additional sound effect choices in the future.
The second problem is the inability to save sounds to the audio library rather than an internal one. Granted, there is a roundabout method you can use by e-mailing a sound to yourself, putting it in iTunes and uploading it, but there should be a more straightforward transfer.
Still, it’s tough to argue with free. I’d recommend grabbing it now before the creators change their minds.
