This article is part review and part op-ed.  Bear with me.

First, the review:  this app is very well done.  The graphics are superb.  It’s easy to navigate and is actually more visually appealing than the app for the most popular social networking site out there, Facebook.  The app has e-mail, chat rooms and photos.

In fact, you can tie updates (such as tweets or photo uploads) to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace and Flickr.  The app also contains built-in access to Hotmail (Microsoft’s e-mail service).

Second, the analysis: with the suddenly rivalry between Apple and Google, this is the perfect opportunity for Microsoft to hedge its way into the smartphone wars and begin rebuilding its damaged mobile empire.  First it was Bing and Seadragon, now its Windows Live Messenger (next, it will probably be Word and Excel, at least for the iPad).

Naturally, you need a data connection and a Windows Live Messenger account (which could also be a Hotmail account) to use the app.  Windows Live Messenger is very easy to use and works as advertised.

Overall, the app is certainly worth downloading particularly considering its interactivity with other social networks.  By doing so, you can prove that you support both Microsoft and Apple, if that is even possible.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:For free? Absolutely.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Microsoft-branded socializers.

What I Like:Good interface design.

What I Don't Like:Not much.

Final Statement:This is the beginning of Microsoft's second coming.
