In the App Store, there are many oversimplified, one-button games, along with many Doodle Jump clones. While the app Wisp: Eira’s Tale may seem similar to both these simple games and the well known tilt, avoid, and ascend game, it ends up being one of the most unique games that I can think of.

What makes it unique? Definitely the game’s theme and graphics. You are a fairy named Eira navigating through a forest filled with perils, all of which can be avoided or countered with a certain power-up (fire and ice for example).

The gameplay also differentiates this game from all others. In this game you do not race to beat the clock or finish before running out of magic. In fact, there is no clock or magic meter in this game. Take your time and enjoy the tranquil music while tracking down the three crystals of each level.

One thing that I really like is the previously-mentioned power-ups of the game. As you progress you will first come across the fire power-up which can burn spider webs that block your way, then the earth power-up which breaks fragile rock, and finally the ice power-up which can temporarily freeze the toxic goo which blocks your path. Sometimes these powers wear off very quickly so you’ll have to clear your path in as little time as possible.

For the most part, though, this game is not much of a challenge. It’s not supposed to be. It’s a relaxing game that does not have a competitive aspect like most other games today. You are not supposed to achieve a high score, but rather enjoy the game.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Yes.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Those who look at casual gaming as relaxing, not boring.

What I Like:The music, hand-drawn graphics, and soothing gameplay.

What I Don't Like:I like the gameplay but some may misunderstand the game and find it boring. The game could have more levels.

Final Statement:Your journey is more important than your finish in this unique, enjoyable game.

Read the Developer's Notes:
Wisp, a nordic ambient puzzle adventure with rich forests and enchanting music!

Eira, a wisp of the forest, is lost and you must help her find her way home.

The journey won’t be without danger though: in the forest lies the ancient and bleeding creature Fáfnir. His blood seeps from his wounds and out into the forest where it gains a life of its own; corrupting and defiling the surrounding woods and any life it comes in contact with. Eira has to avoid being consumed, while solving the mysteries ahead of her.
-=:{GAMEPLAY}:=-

The gameplay consists of you guiding Eira through the forest, avoiding the black blood of Fáfnir and utilizing the many elemental shrines that are scattered all over the woods. These shrines contain magical powers that grant Eira the powers of earth, fire and ice.

-=:{CONTROLS}:=-

To control Eira you simply touch the screen and she will float upwards. Release and she will descend to the ground. To make her go left and right you tilt your phone. This means that the only buttons you will see are for the menus.

-=:{TECHNICAL INFORMATION}:=-

There’s a quality setting in the main menu should you experience slow performance in the game.
