In just over a month I will be off for week’s vacation. That means seven glorious days of Aruban sun, great restaurants, the opportunity to do a good deal of reading (much of it, I suspect, on my iPod Touch) and lots and lots of Scrabble with my mother-in-law. That, in turn, means only one thing– daily humiliation at the hands of someone who usually wins by more than 100 points.

In preparation for our trip I decided to download Wordabble, a neat, Boggle-esque, application. My hope– perhaps with "training" I might be spared a bit of humiliation and get within 50 points of the Scrabble-queen.

I downloaded it and was immediately impressed. It looks great and gives thorough, but brief, instructions. Gameplay is rather simple. You,

"Form words or letters or longer in length by tapping or dragging your finger across connecting tiles. Words are only accepted once and must be the enabled picture."

When the game starts you are presented with a game board that is five tiles in either direction. You simply drag your finger from one file to the next- going vertically, horizontally, or diagonally- so long as one tile is touching the next. When your dragging or tapping completes a word you lift your finger from the screen and the word is added to your score. Along the way you can look at the list of words that you have already found or ask for a hint. The hint option shows you how many times each letter can still be used to make a real word. Oh yeah, that it happened to mention that the game has a timer so that you are only playing against yourself what you’re playing against the clock, as well.

One feature that is worth mentioning is the "puzzle of the day". You can play the new puzzle and then submit your score online in order to compete against other people playing the game. (Just what I need– to be humiliated by anonymous others even before I arrived in Aruba and am humiliated by my mother-in-law.)

All in all, this game is a lot of fun, is constantly changing boards so that you won’t get bored, and at just $.99 it is a real bargain.

Unfortunately, if this game is any indication, this year’s Scrabble competition will be a repeat of prior years. That, in turn, can only need one other thing — another of our annual rituals — happy hour at Mulligans bar.

Quick Take

Value:  High
Would I Buy Again: Yes
Learning Curve: Low
Who is it for: Anyone who likes Boggle or Scrabble or any other word game
What I like: Easy to play, new boards each game,
What I Don’t:  I stink at this as much as I do at Scrabble

Final Statement: This is a fun game and at $.99 it is worth getting if you like word games!
