"Who doesn’t like ping pong?!? How can you go wrong with the app?" I thought to myself as I downloaded it.
It’s on sale! Only $.99 right now, even better!
And then I played it.
World Cup Ping Pong covers all the bases in terms of what it offers; a selection of paddles with varying degrees of power and spin; and 3 different modes of play–head to head, tournement, practice and "arcade". (I wasn’t able to play the head to head version, but I did try the other ones.)
The game controls felt stiff and not realistic; as long as the paddle and the ball would meet, the ball would be ‘hit’. Changing the speed of the paddle or trying to spin the ball didn’t seem to make a difference…The game seemed more like ‘Pong’ in 3d than Ping Pong.
In tournement mode you play against other computer opponents to try and make it through various elminations to be the winner of the World Cup. The opponents are challenging and the game moves at a good clip–if only I could control the paddle better! (But now I’m just rambling.)
Practice mode is just like tournement mode except it isn’t an elimination to be the ‘winner’.
And finally, in arcade mode, the table is bent in half and you have to try and just keep hitting the ball. Randomly different colored rings show up on the table– and hitting them gives you extra points.
It’s fun for a little while, but then again, so is real ping pong to me. If your a fan of Ping Pong, .99 isn’t a bad deal, otherwise, stick to the real thing.
