As a fan of the iPhone game Legends of WrestleMania, I had tremendous hopes for the WWE’s latest iOS game WrestleFest. Sadly, my hopes were dashed by poor graphics and limited capabilities.

The game is a wink and a nod towards the arcade game of the same name that could be found in shopping malls in the early 90’s. The game itself emulates that retro style and that’s where its problems stem.

After the wonderful 3D graphics and excellent capabilities of Legends of Wrestlemania (for which I’m still hoping for an HD iPad version), the 2D graphics seem limited. In playing the game, it doesn’t take long to realize that it lacks fun features like the ability to wrestle outside the ring. Granted, I only played a few matches and that could be possible in unlocked, higher levels of the app.

While this review was written using the HD version of the game on the iPad, it is available for both iPad and iPhone at $3.99 and $2.99 respectively. One can wrestle in a variety of locations and types of matches such as Raw, SmackDown, Saturday Night’s Main Event and even WrestleMania, and even engage in multi-player matches with other users.

WrestleFest does have the usual advantages of wrestling video games, such as the ability to have matches between superstars that couldn’t possibly happen nowadays (“Macho Man” Randy Savage versus The Rock). Even the intros and asides of the game are kind of fun. However, without an impressive experience to go along with it, the capability of the game is wasted.

Quick Take

Value:Low to medium.

Would I Buy Again:Depends on the price.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Retro wrestling fans and retro gamers.

What I Like:Nice selection of wrestlers to choose from.

What I Don't Like:Not into the retro graphics style.

Final Statement:For a good WWE game example, stick to Legends of Wrestlemania
