We are making a batch of reviews of great writing apps for November. Why November? Because NaNoWriMo is going on! What is NaNoWriMo? The National Novel Writing Month! You have a month to write a full novel, and the month is November. And the iPad could be your 2.0 typewriter.
WriteRoom is a very clean plaintext editor. In fact, it is the big brother of one of the best text editors for both iPhone and iPad, PlainText. Of course, being a big brother (and costing more) means more features. Which ones?
Well, first the shared features: Dropbox sync, clean writing interface and full folder management. What does it offer in addition? First thing, you can customize the hell of it. Font size, color, type. Background color. I’m writing this in the console-style green font with black background, my perfect setting. It also offers a customizable extended keyboard for your special text editing needs (angle brackets, quotation marks… you name it).
WriteRoom is clearly one of the best apps out there for casual writers. How well does it fare in writing long pieces? Well, exceedingly well. Since you can have folders with as many files as you want (and can sort them as you want), you can keep each chapter in a file and write happily ever after.
Why choose WriteRoom instead of PlainText? Well, PlainText is free (ad-based). Give it a taste, and if you feel you’d rather remove the ads and play with your fonts, buy WriteRoom. You’ll feel at home.
