The amazing thing about Yowza!! is not the application itself. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a good application that takes your current location and finds discount coupons for vendors in the surrounding area, but that’s not the most amazing bit. The amazing thing about Yowza!! is that it was created by actor Greg Grunberg, who is best known as the telepathic cop Matt Parkman from the television series Heroes as well as several appearances in J.J. Abrams projects.
The app is a good idea. Who doesn’t want digital coupons while on the road? Every little bit helps, particularly in this economy. My problem with the application stems from the fact that few vendors currently trust the concept of a digital coupon.
After all, there is no physical evidence that the coupon exists. There is simply a code, which could undoubtedly be gotten from other online sources. However, the app is free so it costs you nothing to try it (I presume Grunberg and all others involved make money from the sponsors).
Still, it’s amazing that a working actor would find the time and interest to create an iPhone app. Perhaps he’s looking for an alternative career in the event that the acting thing doesn’t work out. He wouldn’t be the first. Wil Wheaton also became a programmer for a little while.
Yowza!! is a decent app that and at the price of free is certainly worth the download. It even has some popular chain sponsors like Toys R’Us and Pier 1 Imports with hopefully more on the way in the future.
