Chuck Darwin’s Extinction Squad is another Adult Swim winning game. Like their previous good games, it combine some serious satirical humor with a simplistic game guaranteed to turn kids of all ages into addicts.
The premise is simple. Chuck Darwin (who may or may not be Charles Darwin) has discovered a hidden batch of Dodo birds and Mr. Darwin and his crew have to try and stop them from going extinct by plummeting off high ledges and splattering into bloody pulps on the ground. Other animals are supposed to be similarly saved throughout the game such as ape, lions and pandas.
Your weapon for preventing the end of the Dodo is a trampoline. Using simple physics, you must reflect the animals off the trampoline and into a “safe” zone on the right of the screen. You can swipe your finger right or left to change the position of the trampoline. Be warned: sometimes you will be inundated with objects falling towards the ground.
The graphics are cute and cartoony and the game play is very simple. Images are slightly too violent for kids (hence ADULT Swim) but shouldn’t make older kids have any nightmares. I wasn’t kidding when I said the animals made a bloody smear on the ground.
The game uses various rules (including minimum animals to save and time limits) to proceed to higher levels. You can also turn off background music and sound from the settings menu.
Extinction Squad is fun and might even allow kids to learn something about conservation in its own satirical way. It’s a bargain as a universal app for 99 cents.
