I only just discovered this app.  I always seem to be late to these things.  It was released in conjunction with the Star Trek movie from this past summer.

Quite simply, the app lets you fire a phaser.  If you rotate the device, you get perspectives on the phaser from either the top or the sides.  There is a game aspect to it involving a moving target, but frankly it’s kind of lame to the point that the less said about it the better.

The game is a big advertisement for said movie.  It even comes with clips that are downloaded into the device’s video player.

From a movie that had incredible CGI, you’d think the game associated with it would be less simplistic than it is.  Mostly it’s a picture of a phaser that fires when you tap it.  There are different lights and sounds for the "stun" and "kill" settings.  It’s even more lame with the first generation iPod Touch which has no external speakers so you can’t even hear the phaser sound without earphones or external speakers.

It’s a cute idea, and on the plus side it is available for free at least.  I had just hoped that Paramount would invest in a better iPhone video game because there is probably a lot of overlap in those that watch Star Trek and those that own a cool piece of technology like the iPhone.  Hopefully they’ll be better prepared when the inevitable sequel rolls around.

Pros: Cute idea.  Free.

Cons: Not very interesting as a game.  Simple graphic animation.  Mostly a promotional tool.
