If there is any doubt that the iPhone and iPod touch should not be considered a gaming machine, then allow the existence of Time Crisis Strike for the iPhone OS to end it.  The Time Crisis series has appeared on several other gaming systems (including an arcade game) and has now been lowered to $.99 for a limited time so everyone can enjoy it.

At its core, the game is a 3D shooter,  but it’s one of the better 3D shooters currently on the device.  With a name like "Time Crisis" I was expecting time-travel to somehow be involved in the plot (maybe hunt down dinosaurs in modern-day New York?), but the user only gets to shoot soldiers.

The gameplay is fairly simple, tap each enemy soldier that you want to shoot.  When you run out of amo, flick the device to reload.  Game modes include Arcade-style play, One Stage Trial play, and Crisis Mission (kills within a quick timeframe).

If your playing the Crisis Mission, and you progress in the game, levels get unlocked and game difficulty increases.  You can also control the difficulty level and the direction of the flick from the options menu.

Personally, even though Time Crisis is a well developed game, it doesn’t really offer much that is new in this genre and I think that Doom (the original first-person shooter) really broke ground, and everything else is unfortunately just a copy cat.

Quick Take

Value:Medium.

Would I Buy Again:Probably for $.99, but not for more.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Those that love first-person shooters or the Time Crisis arcade game.

What I Like:Good graphics and motion.

What I Don't Like:Kind of a simplistic game.

Final Statement:For a good first-person shooter, stick with Doom.
