To start off, please do not take this app seriously. A party game of sorts, Ugly Meter is meant to be taken with a pinch of salt and plenty of humor. Essentially what its name suggests, Ugly Meter is a meter that measures just how visually unappealing something, or in this case a person might be.

Ugly Meter measures the beauty, or rather lack of beauty, of a person by taking a snapshot through the device’s camera before scanning it. However, the whole scanning process is really just nonsense and a cool, futuristic scanner animation is shown to simulate the process. At the end of it, a rating is given to the looks of the scanned target and a snide remark is also passed by the app.

However, it is quite obvious that the app doesn’t actually have any algorithm to check for how visually appealing someone is. Rather, the app generates random numbers as evident when two different scans of the same face generated drastically different results on the ugly scale. Moreover, the app has given excellent ratings to random household objects I scanned like cups but yet gave horrible ratings to fashion models on fashion magazines.

A largely humorous app intended for sleepovers and drunk nights, Ugly Meter is set to entertain. However, please do not use it unless you know that your companions will not have their self-esteem shattered by the cruelly random results generated by the app.

For $0.99, I would say that this one is worth the purchase. The countless laughs you get when you see the shock on your friends’ faces at negative results is more than enough to justify that one dollar.

We rate this app 3.5 out of 5 stars.
