User Rating:How does SOHOinmypocket distinguish itself from the myriad of mapping and travel applications that are available in the App Store? Well, others are free, to start with.
However, in its defense, the app really loves the area South of Houston Street. They have the most comphensive listing of the area that I’ve seen on any of these styles of apps, which includes telephone numbers and website addresses for each place. As with most other apps, you can see locations on a map (provided by Google). You can also mark each particular shop or restaurant or whatever as a favorite place.
The cleverest piece of the app is in its use of digital coupons for the area. There is a "deals" section for the application that takes the user to a slot machine. If you shake the device or tap the "spin" button, the slot machine "spins" and comes up with a deal for the SoHo area. Granted, even with the discount I can’t afford most of the offers. It’s SoHo. What does one expect? The deals "won" are kept in a list for later perusal and there is a limit to the number of deals one can win.
One of my pet peeves is when a paid app also shows ads, which this app does. However, they’re ads for the SoHo area (specifically the website www.sohonyc.com). One could argue that at least the ads stick with the theme.
I’d rate this app not as good or bad, but somewhere in the middle. I don’t like the ads but the slot machine deals wins points for originality.
