We told you in the last week that Apple is preparing some important changes to the offering guarantees system for its devices, and one of them was implemented starting today.

Apple now offers to U.S. customers the opportunity to replace the iPhone 5 screen for a price of $150, the option is available separately from that for $229 a customer can walk away with a refurbished iPhone. This change plus other would reduce by up to $1 billion annual cost of providing a guarantee, the amount is big enough to motivate Apple to not fully satisfy their customers.

In the past any defective iPhone was changed a refurbished one, ie a repaired and rechecked terminal by Apple, which was practically a new iPhone. Now the company will fix it immediately, or after a few days, offering customers a terminal that does not benefit from the same careful examination as a refurbished one. What effects will these changes have remains to be seen, but the cost savings will probably generate other problems for Apple.
