Getting Personal in Mobile Development

touchIf you just realized that there are more sophisticated gadgets in your kitchen than on your desk, you might actually be right. Nowadays, the age of the desktop computers is seriously threatened, mainly by the ubiquitous mobile one. OK, no breaking news here. But did you know that during this year the number of internet-connected mobile devices will exceed that of desktop PCs and laptops? Just in case you needed more proof that the internet is primarily a mobile medium. Or, at least, very serious about its potential in the mobile age.

With such overwhelming interest in mobile media, it looks like this year smartphone users: while doing my research for the Microsoft 70-642 and 70-646 Microsoft exams found out that the worldwide smartphone user base hits 1 billion!) will enjoy the company of tablets too. And let’s not forget the world is not yet saturated with smartphones, as there are still emerging markets in Asia and Africa waiting to join the ‘smart’ communication crowd. But it’s more than just raw mobility. It’s about shorter, smaller, faster too, because if you’re mobile you want easy to access apps on easy to carry devices.

Besides the mobile trend, this year also promises to see a serious upsurge in personal development apps. We’re talking about the apps that usually help track and achieve the day to day goals of the users, like Lift, the well-known iPhone app. This app helps users develop good habits, but it also has a strong social element, as you can add goals others are trying to achieve too. Of course, you can connect the app to your Facebook and Twitter accounts too. In a way it takes your goals more seriously than you do, a bit like a personal trainer, a nagging granny or an over caring mom. Yes, it does look like a return to the roots, except it’s just one click away.
