New nano-SIM standard agreed

When it comes to standards, it is rather hard to agree on one and this is simply because there are a lot of companies which would want to claim their designs to be used as the standard. In the case of the new SIM card standard, it involves a version almost 40% smaller than the current micro-SIM format. This new standard will be called as the nano-SIM and apparently, there will be a lot of companies that will be delving into this new standard.

Due to the smaller size, it is now possible to make future phones to be much smaller than what they currently are right now. It is expected that the new card to be 12.3mm wide, 8.8mm high and 0.67 mm thick. It will also be compatible with the previous versions of the SIM card. It is expected to have an adapter much like the one available with the micro-SIM.

As mentioned before, this new standard wasn’t simply approved because there were a standoff between Apple and the joint group of Nokia, Motorola and RIM. Finally, the companies had agreed to the proposal of the nano-SIM made by both RIM and Motorola. 80% of the design was taken from Apple’s draft project.
