Doggy Datez is a new social network iPhone app that focuses around peoples love for dogs. The premise is quite simple, find new friends while walking your dog. The app uses GPS to show your location, and find other dog lovers around you while they’re out along their usual route. Mark your territory allows you to mark a small spot on the map where you frequently visit, just like your canine friends!

While in theory, this is a really nice app for dog lovers, it has the same weak spot as any social driven network: people need to use it. The big problem right now is that it is extremely hard to find someone on the network that is using the app, let alone walking their dog in the similar vicinity. This immediately makes the application absolutely useless, and until more users start adopting the system, there is very little incentive to go back and check it.

However, if more users do actually start to use it, then it has the potential to be a great social platform for people that walk there dogs. Sharing the passion of owning a pet is a great way to meet new people, and walking along a similar route everyday is a great to develop great friends. The app also has a couple of cool features, such as the ability to steal territories that were marked by other people. So, for instance, if you convince a few fellow dog walkers to take part in this app, you can play games where you steal each others territories back and forth. It’s kind of like a virtual turf war, or a steal the flag kind of situation. This will make it much more likely for users to use it on a regular basis.

The app also features a variety of social features that most users will already be used to from platforms like Facebook. For instance, there is a “wall” where you can see the updates and thoughts that other users post. This can make it very easy to update your fellow dog walkers on what time you’re heading out, or other thoughts you have related to your furry friend. Additionally, other services such as messaging have cute names like sending  “woof.” This adds to the dog theme, and helps keep the app focused on dog owners.

Overall, this app has the potential to be a great tool for dog lovers. It has many unique features, and it is a great place for people that walk their dogs to come together and share their passion in a very complete way. This is a fantastic idea, because people are usually very caring and passionate about their dogs, and having a social network dedicated to it could really catch on. The only problem is that the app needs the users in order to make it a great social platform. Ironically, people won’t use it because there is nobody on it, but there won’t be more users unless people use it. This is the natural downside to attempting to build a social network, and there are few very good ways around it.

Quick Take

Value:Medium

Would I Buy Again:No

Learning Curve:Very simple user interface and easy to operate

Who Is It For:Animal lovers that are looking to make new friends on their walks

What I Like:It is a great idea for people to communicate and become friends over a common passion

What I Don't Like:With almost no users, the social aspect of the app is currently lost. Since that is the entire purpose of the app, it makes it really difficult to want to use this app

Final Statement:If you feel like a pioneer, and are willing to continue to use this app even when nobody else is on there, then feel free to download it! However, without a network, this app becomes just another icon on your screen that is being waited to be deleted next time you organize

Read the Developer's Notes:
DoggyDatez is a location-based mobile platform that makes it easier to find new friends and have more fun while walking your dog. By "marking your territory", you're taking ownership of a little circle (200m radius) in the physical world and seeing who else "visits" your spot, just like dogs do!
Meet new people, make new friends.
It's healthy, it's social and most of all, it's fun!
