User Rating:When I game on my iPhone it is never for hardcore gaming. Usually, I am sitting somewhere wanting to kill a few minutes. This is why I enjoy games that are not terribly in depth. I need to be entertained a few minutes at a time and I want replayability. I do not need hours of gameplay. Friend Freak fits the bill in this style of gaming.
First, you need to know that Friend Freak uses Facebook Connect to create your gameplay. The entire game is knowing information and pictures from your Facebook friends. The game is attractive and runs in landscape mode. All that is required to play is simple flicks of the finger. Basically, you will be dragging a profile picture of the friend whose information matches and dragging into the top box. The game is timed and you are scored on both accuracy as well as speed. Your goal is to attain different levels of being a Friend Freak which are represented with corners of a star. That is all there is to it! The current categories available for your test are name (match the name to the picture), birthday, interests, music, movies, TV shows, relationships, books, and political. The game uses the actual information your friend includes in their profile so some of them were quite funny. I was only good at the name category. I was amazed how many profile pics I knew immediately just from seeing them on the Facebook feed. I was terrible at the other categories, but found them to be amusing. Most of that information I never read and some of the correct answers surprised me. Especially while playing the politics category.
The fact that the game uses your friends’ information from Facebook is what makes this game both fun and very unique. The game is very customized to the user and will have a different experience for everyone depending on how many friends you have and how much you know about those friends. As of the writing of this review, I have 258 friends on Facebook. I do not know if that is a lot, but did create a challenging game for me. All in all, if you are a Facebook user, you will find this game entertaining. If you have enough friends it is replayable. You might even learn something about your friends! I hope other developers see how this game has integrated some of the untapped technologies of the iPhone and bring similar offerings in the future.
Quick Take:
Value: High
Would I buy again? Yes
Learning Curve: Low
Who is it for? Facebook users who want to integrate their friends in a game.
What I like: The idea of integrating social networking into an iPhone game. Replayability.
What I don’t like: Some of the pictures are difficult to make out. (I am sure this is due to poor pictures being uploaded by my friends.
Final statement: It is great to see developers come up with new and unique ideas for the iPhone. This app works very well and is enjoyable. I hope more apps like it are developed.
