Part lava lamp, part mixing a bowl of soup, Gloop a different program.  It doesn’t really serve a “purpose”—it’s not a utility, or a game.  It doesn’t do anything with my lifestyle.  Gloop is really a partical simulator; well, sort of.

When gloop starts up, it’s just a small blue square in the middle of the screen.  But when you “mix” it or “stir” it with your finger it breaks apart.  When the parts of the square bump into eachother, it turns orange, eventually cooling back down to blue.

The effect of the “gloop” flowing is very smooth and calming (like a lava lamp!), but the controls are a little awkward.  For example, if you move your finger in a “black” area of the screen (where I would presume nothing is) some of the gloop moves.  Also regardless of the speed I move my finger, the gloop moves at some sort of set rate.  As such, although the effect of the “gloop” bumping and mixing into eachother is smooth and “realistic”, because the controls don’t seem to interact correctly, the effect of really moving the “gloop” around wears off.  (Also, it’d be nice if it worked with the accelorameter—so tilting the iPhone would make the “gloop” move accordingly).

Quick Take

Value: Medium

Would I Buy Again:  Not sure, maybe

Learning Curve: None

Who Is It For: People that like to "smoosh" and mix stuff around. (My Kids loved it!)

What I Like:  It’s a cool effect

What I Don’t: I’d like to see it use the accelorameter and also a more realistic ‘moving’ effect.

Final Statement: This is a cute little app that’s fun to play with in short bursts.  It’s great for keeping the kids busy for a little bit! 🙂

Read the Developer's Notes:
" Gloop "sits somewhere in that improbable space between an interactive lava lamp, foam resting on water and alien clouds lit by the setting sun(s).

Whatever it is, as you stir this bizarre mix thousands of virtual molecules collide with each other, sticking and slipping. This generates heat causing the gloop to glow and become less viscous. If you treat the gloop more gently it cools and solidifies allowing you to give it form.

NOTE: In this Lite version the gloop fades to blue a few seconds after you first touch the screen
