Holograms is a neat idea—Take a 2D image and turn it into a 3D hologram.

To accomplish this task, take an existing image (or use the camera) and tell Holograms where the depth is.  You do this by selecting the depth (up for closer to you, down for further away) and “painting” (or masking)  the depth in the image.  Once the app knows this information you can then tilt the phone in any direction and the picture warps just as if it’s a 3D hologram.

Sounds like fun! And the demos that it comes with works really well.

When I tried it, I had trouble masking the depths correctly.  Often edges would look “melted” as I moved the phone around.  Or worse yet, part of a head would sink while the rest of it would rise!  Sure it was eerie to watch, but it was also disturbing and not what I wanted either.

If the app could detect the depth itself (maybe based on shadow or clarity of the surfaces) or if it did edge detection an let me pick which “edges” are at what “depths”, then the Hologram may have worked better.

Holograms is a great example of where the technology is now, and I can only assume that in the future it’s just going to get better.

Quick Take

Value: Medium

Would I Buy Again: No

Learning Curve: Not much to learn–but the controls aren’t really great

Who Is It For: People that want to try out the effect

What I Like:  Interesting idea and t

What I Don’t:: Hard to make my own holograms that worked the way I wanted them to.

Final Statement: It’s a cute app, but not fantastic.  Try it at your own risk! ðŸ™‚

Read the Developer's Notes:
