User Rating:I don’t envy the poor sap at iTunes HQ who had to review and categorize this app upon publication. Not only did the quality test ruin his liver, his tolerance and probably his good standing at his favorite neighborhood pub, but he also had to go to work stone and runk and figure out a place to post this app on iTunes.
It’s hard to describe iChug. It’s not quite a game, not quite an entertainment app and not totally useful in terms of functionality and purpose unless your goal is to squeeze as many drinks as possible into a slowly creeping window before "closing time". It’s a weird mix of all those things and yet it is surprisingly simple.
The app uses the iPhone excellerometer to measure the amount of time it takes a drinker to finish their beverage of choice. You hold the iPhone next to the glass as you pound it back and the motion of the glass tilting starts the timer and stops it when you put down the drink.
It feels more than a little uncomfortable holding a phone next to your glass and probably would work better if you chug a square pint, but the timer works very well. It starts and stops when it’s supposed to and can measure it to a fraction of a second, so it will inspire some fun drinking games that don’t involve wearing out your "Bob Newhart Show" collection.
The look and feel of the app is criminally simple and bland. It’s all beer inspired from the background to the color scheme and deserves some kind of variety. Bars serve more than beer.
Still he iPhone deserves more drinking games like this one as long someone also invents a "Drunk Dial" preventin app to go with it.
Quick Take
Value:Worth the price of a Killian's but costs as much as a Pabst Blue Ribbon
Would I Buy Again:Sure, assuming I have the capacity to type straight
Learning Curve:If you know how to drink, you know how to use it
Who Is It For:Frat boys, drunks and alcoholics who want to get more done in the day
What I Like:The accelerometer works with the drinking motion
What I Don't Like:Applebee's bars have more ambiance
Final Statement:Could mark the start of good iPhone drinking games
